In the Lap of the Buddha or Sports and Exercise Nutrition

In the Lap of the Buddha

Author: Gavin Harrison

In this book a teacher of insight meditation offers personal testament, healing words, and wise instruction to help meet the suffering that comes with catastrophic life events. Speaking openly about his own struggles with memories of childhood sexual abuse and with the HIV diagnosis he received in 1989, Gavin Harrison reveals how compassion offers refuge and help for all who suffer from similar crises of body, heart, and spirit. Among the topics covered are: Dealing with fear, anger, and self-hatred Working with difficult relationships Confronting physical pain and the fear of death Transforming the legacy of sexual abuse The question of karma and "Why me?" Grappling with issues of faith, freedom, hope, and miracles Basic insight meditation instructions, plus guided meditations for forgiveness, compassion, and equanimity

Publishers Weekly

With its emphasis on emptiness and detachment, Buddhism's path sometimes seems an esoteric, disengaged, distant trek removed from the realities of life in the emotionally, physically, culturally crowded world. White South African Gavin Harrison's loving manual, however, casts light on the application of meditation to real-life conditions like HIV and AIDS, memories of childhood sexual abuse and the less dire fear and pain of daily life. The heartfelt prose rings true, as do the parallels between the lives of contemporary Americans and the life of Siddartha Gautauma; and Harrision's life itself, here documented, convincingly makes the case that Buddhist meditation practices are not a path away from life but rather a road into and through it. (Aug.)

Library Journal

In this courageous and articulate personal testimony, a gay man uses Buddhist insight meditation to deal with the suffering he has experienced from child abuse and from being HIV positive. He describes how he has been able to open himself to the suffering as he follows the five Buddhist precepts of refraining from harming, stealing, using false speech, engaging in sexual misconduct, and using intoxicants. Many subsections within the six chapters begin with accounts of the Buddha's life and teachings taken from Buddhist scriptures. These are followed by Harrison's reflections on how we deal-usually ineffectively-with suffering. Instructions are also given on the way Buddhist meditation practice is done. This is a powerful presentation by an effective writer who uses Buddhist teaching and meditative practice to effect a triumph of the human spirit. Highly recommended for libraries whose patrons need books to help them cope with the universal experience of human suffering.-David Bourquin, California State Univ., San Bernardino

Sports and Exercise Nutrition

Author: William D McArdl

This highly researched text teaches interactions between nutrition and exercise concepts and practical applications. Readers receive a strong foundation in the science of exercise nutrition and bioenergetics, plus insight about how the principles work in the real world of human physical activity and sports medicine. The text is logically organized with fundamental information about nutrient digestion, absorption and assimilation presented first, followed by how nutrients provide energy to the body.

Julie A. Patten

This book is an historical perspective and a six-component model for a cross-disciplinary field of exercise nutrition. The model is focused on the areas of nutritional enhancement, peak physiologic function, health and longevity, safety, energy balance and body composition, and optimal growth. The authors skillfully present an historical perspective and their ideas for the creation of the field they call exercise nutrition. The book is designed for a one-semester course that logically sequences concepts of exercise physiology, energy metabolism, and nutrition. It is written primarily as an upper division college course text for students who need nutrition content integrated with concepts of exercise physiology and energy metabolism. The authors provide an excellent historical overview linking the fields of nutrition and exercise to bolster their proposed model of a discipline of ""Exercise Nutrition"" that integrates data from chemistry, exercise physiology, nutrition, biochemistry, medicine, and physiology. They adeptly integrate current, research-based exercise and nutrition-related information relevant to physically active individuals. Numerous color figures, tables, and equations are expertly used to illustrate and elucidate text content. The extensive appendix provides current, reliable information and sources to support the content of the text. The authors have a web site to support the text. The authors' effort to integrate exercise and nutrition-related information along with an historical overview of the two disciplines is unique and commendable. There is in-depth, valid information for those desiring an integrated approach to the study of human nutrition and physicalactivity. Regardless of whether a discipline of ""Exercise Nutrition"" is established or not as proposed by the authors, this book demonstrates the successful integration of valid nutrition-related topics and exercise information.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Jude Christopher Sullivan, MS (University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This book is a condensed compilation of centuries of our cumulative understanding of human function in health and disease and the role nutrition assumes in this process. In addition, it strives to endorse an integrated understanding of this body of science and, in turn, promote a positive impact on how one can use this information where it is necessary:ultimately in the care of a practitioner's clients and/or patients. This book is the second edition of a book originally published in 1999.
Purpose: The implied and discussed intent of this book is to skillfully blend many different contributing existing scientific disciplines (e.g. biochemistry, exercise physiology, medicine, etc.). The authors promote their agenda to recognize a new field referred to as "exercise nutrition." It is meticulously prepared in order to describe our basic understanding of the role nutrition has on normal human biology and function, but also strives to describe the many different paths that result in the course of our lives (e.g., aging and resulting osteoporosis) and the decisions we might make to eat and live a certain way (e.g., a healthy athlete vs. one with a disordered eating profile). The authors' efforts are worthwhile and they meet their stated objectives in that they provide the necessary scientific background to augment one's fundamental understanding and then take it one step further by providing very real and necessary practical application points.
Audience: The book is written by pre-eminent experts in the field of nutrition and exercise physiology and it would serve as a useful resource for a diverse group. It provides excellent fundamental information for nutrition, exercise physiology, and normal health required by an undergraduate in virtually any health-related course. Its comprehensive literature review at the end of each chapter serves as an excellent resource to any research scientist. And, there are basic concepts of identification and guidelines that would be useful to a clinical healthcare practitioner.
Features: This is designed to be a "cutting edge" teaching tool, learning tool, and reference resource. It provides such information as the latest Dietary Reference Intakes, normative tables (e.g., standards for overweight and obesity), up-to-date indices for monitoring change in health status (e.g. regional body fat distribution and health risks), as well as expanded chapters addressing the nutritional needs of physically active people and those in sports competition. The authors take steps to build on each previous section in order to develop a logical line of thought that ultimately evolves into practice. Although it is impossible for one to become an expert in a single semester (which is the length of time recommended for completion of this text), it provides a sound template from which a practitioner could work. The additions and modifications to the original publication serve to provide an updated list of resources for reference as well as hands-on ideas and methods to be used for immediate practical application situations. In particular, two companion interactive CD-ROM discs are provided along with technical support. The first disc is a nutritional analysis program which can also be used as a reference of nutrition data as well as a report generator which can be used to assist with client counseling. The second disc is a study guide providing 300 multiple choice and true/false questions along with an annotated answer key. It would be advantageous for the authors to expound on the notion of body composition as a "relatively exact" science. They correctly point out that error does exist with in vivo measurement, but this point is all too frequently glossed over in practice. I would recommend addressing the need for continued validation of currently accepted field modalities (e.g. skinfolds, BIA and Bod Pod) against a multicomponent criterion. The authors make an important point regarding the need for extensive practice in administering such technology. It would also be helpful to emphasize the need to expertly, delicately, and honestly interpret results for an individual such as an obese client on a weight reduction program, or an excessively lean athlete striving to lose additional weight/fat in order to enhance performance. Their use of case studies might be valuable here to provide a basic framework of useful dialogue that could be engaged in by the practitioner.
Assessment: This second edition publication is an improvement over its predecessor. It is a valuable teaching tool for the instructor, learning tool for the student, and information resource for the healthcare provider.

This world-famous beauty reveals the best-kept secrets behind her timeless face, toned body, and unstoppable spirit. With an upbeat, inspiring tone, she shows you how to enhance your natural beauty, increase your energy and live life to the fullest--at any age. It’s a complete home regime filled with invigorating ideas and empowering exercises to beautify the body, strengthen the mind, and cherish the spirit . . . gracefully.

Publishers Weekly

Ramsey's best friend in high school was the beautiful Ali MacGraw, who "hopscotched right over the gawky stage" of adolescence. With such a friend, Ramsay says, "you couldn't help but feel insecure." Readers might be tempted to feel the same as Ramsey describes hopscotching over her own gawky, aging stage. Beautiful and accomplished, she has gone from happy stay-at-home mom of six (of whom coauthor Hummel is one) to older career woman and runway model in her 60s. But while few women have her genes, or her success, they may benefit from Ramsey's frank advice and beauty tips. She includes such useful information as how to pose for a photograph, strategic uses for Botox, what to eat, how to exercise, what makeup to use, the advantages of meditation and how to stay sexual in a long-term marriage. None of it is particularly original, but it is heartfelt and admirably health conscious (except perhaps for the Botox). Not everything has been roses for Ramsey. She's a survivor of uterine cancer and was diagnosed with a weak heart. How, then, does she do it? Ramsey attributes much of her success to the power of positive thinking. And then, of course, there are those genes. (May)

Trigger Point Therapy for Headaches & Migraines: Your Self-Treatment Workbook for Pain Relief

Author: Valerie Delaun

"I have such a bad headache!" For many of us, this is an oft repeated cry of anguish. Statistics about headaches and migraines are downright astonishing: One in six people have frequent headaches, and, of those, one in ten suffers from migraines. You are not alone. Headaches and migraines result in more than 10 million doctor visits each year. If you struggle frequently with headache pain, this book offers a welcome solution. Trigger point therapy is an effective self-care approach you can use to get relief from headache pain.

Trigger points form in a portion of the muscle cell where blood flow is reduced and metabolic wastes are not being exchanged for oxygen and nutrients. When enough trigger points are located together, they can form palpable knots in the tissue. Trigger points can cause pain, either in the area of the trigger point, or by referral to other areas of the body. Trigger points can be treated by applying pressure to affected areas, often providing instant relief. This book explains trigger point physiology and then offers a complete program for self-care that includes detailed illustrations of all pressure and stretching techniques. In addition, it provides an in-depth look at the factors that cause and perpetuate trigger points, such as body mechanics, injuries, diet and nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and emotional factors, and provides solutions to address each perpetuating factor.

This colorful book was designed for girls ages 9 to 15, the age range of puberty in most industrialized countries. It is written by a professional counselor who has worked with young girls in Australia about this life transition. Many of the girl's ideas, questions, and comments are included in this helpful guide which lends a personal touch to descriptions of the usual physiological changes. The attractive layout, colorful photos, drawings, and frank text deal with issues such as anatomy, nutrition, cramps, protection and hygiene, emotional issues, and self concept. Some young girls may appreciate all of this information, while others may find it a bit disconcerting. An adult may want to review the book first to judge if it is appropriate for their child. A glossary is included.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-While the basic information presented here is sound, the book is marred by a reliance on an overly cute presentation that frequently slops over into silliness-"That whole area between your legs is known as the vulva-. Please don't confuse this with Volvo which is something your parents might drive you to school in-." The Australian slang will be unfamiliar to readers in the United States (such as "surfboards" for sanitary pads and "minties" for tampons). Overall, the book is visually appealing, featuring splashy graphics and bold color photos of girls, but the ethnic representation is almost exclusively Caucasian. The question-and-answer format is readable and practical, and the sidebars based on interviews are interesting and personable. Lynda Madaras's The What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls (Newmarket, 2000) is a solid resource about puberty, written in a more sensitive manner, and presenting its information in a more straightforward, less distracting way.-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Gentle Birth Choices or The Yoga Tradition

Gentle Birth Choices

Author: Barbara Harper

FAMILY / CHILDBIRTH

”Should I give birth at home, in a birth center, or in a hospital? Should I see a midwife or an obstetrician for prenatal care? What approach to pain relief should I use during labor? How does a waterbirth work?”

Expectant parents are faced with a daunting array of choices to make about prenatal care, labor, and birth. In Gentle Birth Choices Barbara Harper, renowned childbirth advocate, nurse, midwife, and mother of three, explains all the available choices and shows how to plan a truly meaningful, family-centered birth experience. She dispels the medical myths that so often shift control of birth away from women and reimagines birth without fear or violence and with minimal pain. Harper reveals the abundant range of gentle birth approaches, including:

• giving birth in an independent birth center, at home, or in a hospital birthing room
• finding a primary caregiver who shares your philosophy of birth
• deciding how to best use current technologies

She also provides practical advice for couples wishing to explore options such as hiring a doula or laboring in water to avoid the unwanted effects of drugs and epidurals.

“Exactly the sort of guide that pregnant women have been needing to help them sort through the myriad choices and options that confront them today.”
ROBBIE DAVIS-FLOYD, author of Birth As an American Rite of Passage

“Gentle Birth Choices provides a new model of maternity care that reduces the need for high-tech crisis intervention and focuses instead on preparation and health.”
HEALTHWORLD

“A must-have for expectant mothers and their loved ones. . . . Gentle Birth Choices is an intelligent and sympathetic guide to birthing options that explores nontraditional ways that put women and their babies first.”
NEW AGE RETAILER

The author’s accompanying 60-minute Gentle Birth Choices DVD blends interviews of midwives and physicians with footage of six different birth experiences--including a home birth, waterbirths, vaginal birth after a prior Cesarean section, and birth with other children present. The DVD vividly demonstrates the strength of women during childbirth and the healthy and happy outcome of women exercising gentle birth choices. It is a moving and powerful instructional tool, not only for expectant parents, but also for midwives, hospitals, birth centers, and doctors.

“Brace yourself for a powerful experience. This remarkable production combines art, education, and politics. Highly recommended.”

Physician Lydon (Look Hot, Live Long) presents a six-week nutrition and exercise plan designed to promote weight loss, improve fitness, and reduce the signs of aging. Rooted in research and the author's medical knowledge and background in nutrition and fitness, this serious and occasionally technical work eschews fad-diet trends for clear and in-depth explanations of Lydon's recommendations. While advocating the nutritional importance of lean protein, judicious intake of good fats, and plenty of lower-glycemic carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables, she also strongly emphasizes the greater value of shorter, high-intensity weight-bearing exercise sessions over lengthy periods of aerobic exercise. Clearly illustrated exercise routines, self-tracking forms, recommended-foods lists, and a small recipe section round out the text. Neither condescending nor dumbed down, this intelligent guide will make a worthwhile and refreshing addition to the fitness-and-nutrition genre. Readers interested in physician-authored diet books may also like Nicholas Perricone's The Perricone Weight-Loss Dietor Andrew Weil's Eating Well for Optimum Health. Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder

Author: James Lock

Always harmful and potentially deadly, eating disorders can wreak havoc on families. Unfortunately, the same can often be said of their treatment: blaming parents for the illness, many eating disorder programs exclude parents and widen the rift in an already shattered family. This powerful and controversial book by top researchers James Lock and Daniel le Grange argues that parents are not the culprits but the key to their teen's recovery. Based on new research, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder shows how parents can break the disorder's control over their child's mind and re-establish normal eating and family relations. The odds for full recovery drop precipitously if treatment is delayed. A radically important wake up call, this book urges parents to act now.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Tammy Yuen, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book on adolescent eating disorders is geared towards parents and families to help them better deal with a very difficult condition.
Purpose: The purpose is to help parents understand and deal with a teenager's eating disorder on many levels. The objectives set out by the authors are very worthwhile and are easily met within the context of the book.
Audience: The intended audience is parents, but there likely is some value for pediatricians and school workers as well. The authors are quite credible and knowledgeable on the topic.
Features: The book does an excellent job at helping parents to identify, understand, and work with treatment of eating disorders. A particularly nice feature is the inclusion of examples of various presentations of teenagers with eating disorders at various stages of the disease. The book has references of other helpful materials or books at the end of each chapter. In addition, at the end of the book there are many valuable resources to help families. It is particularly nice that the issue of how families can work with healthcare professionals is addressed.
Assessment: The book is of high quality and would be of help to any family facing this difficult situation.

The Dirt on Clean or Healing Psoriasis

The Dirt on Clean: An Unsanitized History

Author: Katherine Ashenburg

The question of cleanliness is one every age and culture has answered with confidence. For the first-century Roman, being clean meant a two-hour soak in baths of various temperatures, scraping the body with a miniature rake, and a final application of oil. For the aristocratic Frenchman in the seventeenth century, it meant changing your shirt once a day and perhaps going so far as to dip your hands in some water. Did Napoleon know something we didn’t when he wrote Josephine “I will return in five days. Stop washing”? And why is the German term Warmduscher—a man who washes in warm or hot water—invariably a slight against his masculinity? Katherine Ashenburg takes on such fascinating questions as these in Clean, her charming tour of attitudes to hygiene through time.

What could be more routine than taking up soap and water and washing yourself? And yet cleanliness, or the lack of it, is intimately connected to ideas as large as spirituality and sexuality, and historical events that include plagues, the Civil War, and the discovery of germs. An engrossing fusion of erudition and anecdote, Clean considers the bizarre prescriptions of history’sdoctors, the hygienic peccadilloes of great authors, and the historic twists and turns that have brought us to a place Ashenburg considers hedonistic yet oversanitized.

Publishers Weekly

According to Ashenburg (The Mourner's Dance), the Western notion of cleanliness is a complex cultural creation that is constantly evolving, from Homer's well-washed Odysseus, who bathes before and after each of his colorful journeys, to Shaw's Eliza Doolittle, who screams in terror during her first hot bath. The ancient Romans considered cleanliness a social virtue, and Jews practiced ritual purity laws involving immersion in water. Abandoning Jewish practice, early Christians viewed bathing as a form of hedonism; they embraced saints like Godric, who, to mortify the flesh, walked from England to Jerusalem without washing or changing his clothes. Yet the Crusaders imported communal Turkish baths to medieval Europe. From the 14th to 18th centuries, kings and peasants shunned water because they thought it spread bubonic plague, and Louis XIV cleaned up by donning a fresh linen shirt. Americans, writes Ashenburg, were as filthy as their European cousins before the Civil War, but the Union's success in controlling disease through hygiene convinced its citizens that cleanliness was progressive and patriotic. Brimming with lively anecdotes, this well-researched, smartly paced and endearing history of Western cleanliness holds a welcome mirror up to our intimate selves, revealing deep-seated desires and fears spanning 2000-plus years. 82 b&w illus. (Nov. 15)

Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information

Scott H. Silverman - Library Journal

Freelancer Ashenburg is drawn to mining universal cultural experiences, although her previous book, The Mourner's Dance: What We Do When People Die, had more sober subject matter than this irony-laden, "greatest hits" sampling of Western hygienic history. The Greeks bathed for their gods, contemporary Americans are wallowing in long showers. In between these temporal poles a lot of filth accumulated, providing fertile base for endemic lice. Indeed, the appalling sanitary conditions of medieval Europe-persisting into the 19th century-made each individual a fine host for the Plague-bearing fleas that jumped from rodent to human. Ashenburg piles one delightful (delight in the grotty being a taste decidedly more for some than others) anecdote upon another. It turns out, for instance, that Louis XIV may have been the Sun King but not because he exposed his skin to air (or water). A final strength of this not particularly analytical history is the concluding chapters' demonstration of the triumphant intersection of technology (e.g. Procter & Gamble's serendipitous discovery of how to mass-produce bar soap) and the rise of the advertising industry and its key distribution vehicle, the middle-class-aimed illustrated journals. Recommended.

School Library Journal

Adult/High School- This is a fascinating examination of the changing notions of what it means to be clean, and how those concepts fit into the worldview of different societies. The book is especially valuable for exploring the daily lives of people in past societies, but also for providing perspective on our attitudes toward ourselves, our bodies, and our world. It begins with the communal baths of the Greeks and Romans and explores the religious and ritual aspects of bathing, including Christian baptism. The public bath returned with the Crusaders, who brought the custom back to Europe in the form of the Turkish bath. With the plague and fears of communicable diseases, people avoided water-which they feared made the body vulnerable-in favor of linen cloth, which could be changed regularly, in lieu of bathing. Fear of immersing the body in water continued into the 20th century. Ashenburg, who uses interesting quotes from contemporaries to illustrate her history, speculates that in the future, when water shortages dictate new concepts of cleanliness, our own day may be seen as an age of excessive bathing and deodorizing.-Tom Holmes, King Middle School, Berkeley, CA

Kirkus Reviews

Cleanliness has a surprising history. The morning routines of Americans generally include a shower, but people in other times and places have thought differently about what constitutes an appropriately clean body, writes Ashenburg (The Mourner's Dance, 2003, etc.). Many cultures find body odor sexy; the choicest illustration appears in a letter from Napoleon, who wrote to Josephine, "I will return to Paris in five days. Stop washing." Beginning with the social significance of the public bath in ancient Greece, the author moves on to consider early Christian ascetics' disdain for cleanliness ("dirtiness became a uniquely Christian badge of holiness") and the appearance of instructions about face-washing in medieval etiquette guides. During the 19th century, the burgeoning American middle class got serious about keeping bodies and houses clean, and cleanliness was imputed with a new moral value; people could judge another's worthiness by the glow of their skin and the shine of their hair. In clear and straightforward prose, Ashenburg condenses a vast amount of information into smooth chapters that are free of padding. She includes many quirky tidbits of cultural history, such as the role played by bathing in Eliza Doolittle's transformation from Cockney flower-seller to fair lady and the appearance in the 1930s of vaguely menacing magazine ads that threatened women with spinsterhood if they dared let their breath or armpits smell. She closes on a disturbing note, pointing out that Americans have developed the standards of cleanliness they enjoy today at least in part because modern irrigation and rainfall levels made it possible for millions of people to shower regularly. If the globalclimate changes, our current habits may strike our 22nd-century descendants as odd, if not shocking. Dozens of charming illustrations distinguish a book notable for its engaging design as well as its illuminating content.

Stealth Germs in Your Body or Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook

Stealth Germs in Your Body: How Hidden Infectious Organisms Can Jeopardize Your Health

Author: Erno Daniel

Would you have suspected that your stomach ulcer was due to bacteria, or that a viral infection causes cervical cancer? Faced with mounting evidence that “stealth germs”—smoldering chronic infections in the body (some treatable or even preventable)—are at the root of numerous health problems, Dr. Erno Daniel provides the first-ever medical reference book on the subject for the general public. Dr. Daniel is a recognized expert in the field who specializes in diagnosing such illnesses, so he has both the scientific background and illuminating case studies to offer. Organized by type of germ and where in the body each manifests itself, this invaluable guide will help patients overcome their lack of medical awareness; understand the variable ways individuals react to such infections; and navigate the complexities of physician-patient communication about multiple symptoms. It’s all done with an important life-saving goal in mind: helping people know more so they can get an accurate diagnosis of their ailments and get the treatment they need. Weaving cutting-edge scientific research together with a fascinating history of infectious disease and practical guidelines for collaborating with your doctor to avoid misdiagnosis, Stealth Germs is that rare health book that’s also a fascinating reference. Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook: 200 Gourmet & Homestyle Recipes for the Food Allergic Family

Author: Cybele Pascal

The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook is an important health resource for you and your family. Here, for the first time, is a comprehensive recipe book that eliminates the top eight food allergens as identified by the Food and Drug Administration.

There is no need to miss out on nutrition, variety, or flavor - even if you can't tolerate certain foods. These recipes include all of the foods you can eat, and they will reward you with the added benefits of improved health and great taste.

Library Journal

A lifelong enthusiastic cook, Pascal had to change how she thought about food completely when her four-month-old son was diagnosed with severe food allergies. This book is the result, containing more than 200 recipes that are free of the eight most common allergenic ingredients: dairy, egg, wheat, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish. Anyone following a vegan diet will also find this a valuable resource for baked goods since all of the breads, cookies, and cakes are dairy- and egg-free. It is not a specifically vegetarian cookbook, though, as it contains recipes for comfort foods like Chicken Potpie and Lamb Stew. There are recipes for every occasion, whether it's for Chocolate Layer Cake or Homemade Granola Bars. Most important, the author understands how real families shop, cook, and eat and offers suggestions on how to adapt to the food-allergic lifestyle. Of particular value are the lists of foods to keep on hand, what to buy at the grocery store, and a list of great mail and Internet resources. Highly recommended for public libraries.-Wendy Bethel, Southwest Public Libs., Grove City, OH Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Conquer Back and Neck Pain or Dr Bernsteins Diabetes Solution

Conquer Back and Neck Pain: Walk It Off! A Spine Doctor's Proven Solutions for Finding Relief Without Pills or Surgery

Author: Mark D Brown

Renowned spine surgeon Dr. Mark Brown, MD, PhD, explains exactly what causes back pain and why humans are so predisposed to spinal problems. He provides a detailed questionnaire that allows you to identify which of seven types of back pain you are experiencing, and then he explains each of those types in clear and easy-to-understand language. Contrary to what you might expect from a spinal surgeon, Dr. Brown actually advocates against turning to surgery in most cases of spinal pain. In his 35 years of experience, he has found that the vast majority of back pain cases will resolve with minimal treatment. In fact, the very best thing you can do is to simply allow your body to heal itself by avoiding the many treatment pitfalls that people with back pain commonly fall into when looking for relief. Avoiding these mistakes, along with incorporating gentle aerobic exercise, will almost always allow you to "walk off" your back or neck pain naturally.

Midwest Book Review

Conquer Back & Neck Pain: Walk it Off! is highly recommended for sufferers of back and neck pain, and for community library health collections.

Dana Ladd - Library Journal

With this well-organized, easy-to-follow book, spine surgeon Brown (emeritus, orthopedics & rehabilitation, Univ. of Miami) helps sufferers of back and neck pain make informed decisions about when to seek treatment for their pain. He begins by describing seven different types of back pain, providing a checklist to help readers identify which type they are experiencing, then illustrates various situations that make clear when sufferers can walk off the pain and when they should seek help immediately. Brown advises against surgery in most cases, instead espousing light aerobic exercise as an effective means of treatment. He defines medical terms and describes medical procedures (e.g., magnetic resonance imaging) in great detail as well as provides many helpful-though at times too small-illustrations. The chapter on prevention could have been expanded to include more information, but, all told, the book is quite useful. Recommended for large public libraries and large consumer health collections.

Real Food for Healthy Kids: 200+ Easy, Wholesome Recipes

Chapter One

What to Feed Your Kids and Why

Scaling the Food Pyramid

There's a reason why kids have to be in their late teens to vote, drink, or drive. It isn't until then that they've gained some measure of maturity or self-discipline. That need for good judgment also applies to their nutritional choices. Just as we would never leave a six-year-old unsupervised with a kitchen knife, nor should we leave him with a cupboard packed with candy. Kids of all ages need some healthy eating guidance to ensure that they are getting a nutritious diet. This book will help you help them, providing you with wholesome recipes. Yes, there are also some delicious treats and desserts included, but even the vast majority of these we gave a nutritional make over so you'll feel better about making them (plus, we feel strongly that kids need to learn moderation, not deprivation). But first, in order to determine what your kids should eat on a daily basis, you need to learn about the basic food groups they should have each day and what constitutes an appropriate portion for their age.

How much kids eat is almost as important as what they eat, and learning about portion control is crucial, even at an early age. The concept of teaching young children about portion control is a relatively new one. Parents used to insist kids clean their plates (some still do) and now we are told that we should allow young children to regulate themselves, eating what they need and leaving the rest on the plate. However, even that modern theory is in dispute. A study of preschoolers published in a 2005 issue ofAppetite magazine found that how much the kids ate correlated strongly with the amount of food placed on their plates. So, whether you have toddlers or teenagers, it's best to give them the appropriate portions for their ages and sizes. Kids who tend to leave food on the plate should be allowed to do so, unless you feel they are not getting enough protein, calcium, vitamins, and the like. For kids who are natural clean-plate clubbers, give them appropriate portions, and if they ask for seconds, offer them more fruit and veggies first.

It's also never too early for children to learn about healthy and unhealthy foods. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute sponsored a study tracking almost six hundred kids aged eight to thirteen. They found that kids who attended nutrition classes ate a significantly healthier diet, even years later, than those who did not. In response, the institute introduced the idea of "Go Foods," which were healthy everyday foods; "Slow Foods," which you could indulge in a couple of times a week; and "Whoa Foods," which you would have only occasionally. (For more information on this and other health and nutrition information for kids, go to www.realfoodforhealthykids.com.)

What follows is a brief synopsis of the latest government guidelines on what and how much children should eat, broken down by age. It's important to follow these basic tenets for good nutrition, modifying them slightly for your particular child's needs. Obviously, a healthy diet and exercise go hand in hand, something our video-game-playing, computer-glued kids should be reminded of daily. It bears remembering that doctors have concluded that this is the first generation who may not outlive their parents, due to unhealthy weight and its resulting problems such as diabetes and heart disease: Childhood obesity is up 45 percent in the last decade, and at this printing, 16 percent of our children aged six to nineteen are overweight or obese, and another 20 percent are at risk of becoming overweight or obese. There has been a sharp increase in the incidence of Type 2 diabetes and there is a direct correlation between a diet high in sugar and fat and little physical activity.

Daily Nutritional Guidelines

The United States Department of Agriculture created a food pyramid of daily guidelines for kids. (It's available online at www.mypyramid.gov, although the guidelines are only applicable for children aged two and up.) Some nutritionists feel the government should have been more strict, for instance, requiring all, not just some, of the grains to be whole grains, insisting on reduced fat when recommending milk and dairy products, and completely restricting sodas and sports drinks, rather than labeling them as drinks to be used occasionally. Essentially, a child's daily diet should be composed mostly of calories from complex carbohydrates and lean proteins and no more than 20 percent of calories from fat. Here are particulars about each category of food and the specific daily nutritional breakdown for preschoolers, elementary school children, and teenagers, all derived from the U.S.D.A. and the Institute of Medicine.

Daily Foods

Vegetables: Opt for bright and dark veggies: spinach, sweet potatoes, and carrots are great choices. Starchy, whiter foods, such as baking potatoes and corn, are less nutritious.

Fruits: Choose vitamin-rich fresh fruits, such as strawberries, peaches, mangoes, and apples. Fruit juices should be consumed as little as possible. When offering juice, make sure it is 100 percent real fruit juice with no sugar added.

Grains: Use whole or multigrain flours, whole-grain breads, oatmeal, whole-grain low-sugar cereals, brown rice, and whole-wheat pasta. Ban white bread and white rice from your house as much as possible.

Meats and Beans: Serve lean proteins, such as beef, pork, chicken, fish, beans, tofu, or eggs. When preparing any protein-rich food, opt to serve it steamed, baked, or grilled, not fried.

Dairy: Serve lean sources of dairy, such as low-fat milk (check with your doctor to determine whether your child should have whole or reduced-fat milk), low-fat yogurt, ricotta, or cheese.

Oils: Use monounsaturated oil, such as olive—preferably extra-virgin—safflower, and canola oils. They provide vitamin E for healthy skin and the development of cells.

Fats and Sweets: Limit intake of butter, cream, sugary cereals, soda, candy, and the like as much as possible.

21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox

Author: Roni Deluz

Detox diets are making news as the quickest, easiest way to shed pounds, boost your energy, and get yourself on a wellness track. Popular in the 1970s, cleansing fasts are again all the rage among celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney, and Madonna.

One of the key advocates of the health benefits of cleansing detoxes is Roni DeLuz, ND, a licensed naturopathic and health practitioner at Martha's Vineyard Holistic Retreat, part of the renowned Martha's Vineyard Inn. The idea behind DeLuz's new detox plan is the belief that the foods we eat (along with the coffee, tea, and alcohol we drink and the air we breathe) contain harmful and toxic substances that accumulate in our bodies and need to be removed in some way. In 21 Pounds in 21 Days, DeLuz offers three different detox programs, including the original and most effective 21-day "MasterFast," which promises a 21-pound weight loss in just three weeks and focuses on detoxification through antioxidants, fasting, stress reduction, and lifestyle changes. Also included in the book are:

  • Maintenance plans
  • Dozens of easy, delicious recipes
  • Real-life tips
  • An extensive glossary of terms
  • A guide to supplements

Meals consist of supplement-laden drinks, herbal teas, thick, delicious vegetable purees, and "live" juices, along with nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes designed to keep the body's systems stable and its cells nourished while harmful toxins are flushed out. 21 Pounds in 21 Days isn't just for those looking to lose weight; everyone can benefit from this revolutionary detoxdiet that results in a clean, refreshed system that functions at its best.
